GCCW Overcomes Challenges at Glencore's Smelter Site
At Greater City Concrete Works (GCCW), we pride ourselves on our ability to tackle complex projects with precision and dedication, even in the most challenging conditions. Our recent work at Glencore’s Smelter site is a testament to this commitment, where we were contracted to manage two significant civil packages that required both technical expertise and resilient problem-solving.
Managing the Civil Package for a New Concentrate Storage Tank
GCCW was entrusted with the civil package for a building addition designed to house a new concentrate storage tank at Glencore’s Smelter site. This project was extensive, involving 209 helical piles, intricate excavation and backfill processes, and the forming, reinforcing, and pouring of 290 cubic meters of concrete. Additionally, the project required sewer installation and the relocation of five existing utility trestles, all within the constraints of an active smelting operation.
One of the standout aspects of this project was our ability to carry out the work without any impact on the ongoing smelting processes—a critical requirement for Glencore. This achievement underscores our team’s expertise in working within live industrial environments, where safety and precision are paramount.
However, the project was not without its challenges. We faced difficult ground conditions that required adaptive techniques and solutions. Moreover, the work was conducted during winter, which brought record snowfalls and extremely low temperatures. Despite these obstacles, our team remained focused and completed the project efficiently, maintaining the high standards of quality and safety that GCCW is known for.
Delivering the Civil Package for the New #18 Substation
In another critical project at Glencore’s Smelter, GCCW successfully completed the civil package for the new #18 Substation. This project included the construction of two new High Voltage Pole Foundations, Transformer Foundations, E-house Foundations, and the installation of 200 feet of pre-cast electrical duct bank. Over a two-month period, we poured a total of 80 cubic meters of concrete, navigating the challenges of winter construction once again.
Despite the harsh conditions, which included freezing temperatures and the logistical difficulties of winter work, our team delivered the project on time and within budget. This success was a result of meticulous planning, skilled execution, and our team’s unwavering commitment to overcoming the challenges posed by the environment.
A Testament to GCCW’s Capabilities
These projects at Glencore’s Smelter site highlight GCCW’s capabilities in managing complex, high-stakes construction work within demanding industrial settings. Our ability to adapt to unforeseen challenges, coupled with our focus on safety and precision, ensures that we consistently meet and exceed our clients’ expectations.
As we continue to grow and take on new projects, we remain committed to the principles that have guided us through these and many other successful endeavors: excellence in execution, a relentless focus on safety, and a dedication to delivering results that stand the test of time.
