The Challenges of Winter Concrete Placing and How We Overcome Them at GCCW

Cold Temperatures and Concrete Curing

Concrete hardens through hydration, a chemical reaction that slows significantly below 5°C (41°F). In extreme cold, this process can stop entirely, leading to weak, brittle concrete. To prevent this, we use cold-weather accelerators, heated water, and adjusted mix designs. These methods ensure the concrete cures properly, even in freezing temperatures.

Preventing Freezing and Ensuring Strength

If concrete freezes before it sets, the water inside expands, causing internal damage that weakens the structure. We counter this by using insulated blankets, heaters, and temporary enclosures to maintain a stable curing environment. Preheating the ground before pouring also helps create the right conditions for setting.

Cold weather also slows strength development, which can delay project timelines. To keep projects on track, we use high-early-strength concrete mixes designed to achieve critical strength quickly, even in lower temperatures. This ensures durability without compromising efficiency.

Managing Snow, Ice, and Wind Exposure

Wind chill can cause rapid moisture loss, leading to surface cracks. To prevent this, we cover concrete with burlap or plastic sheets and apply curing compounds that slow evaporation. Wind barriers also help protect fresh concrete from excessive exposure.
