Precision Concrete Work for a Critical Training Facility

When infrastructure supports life-saving training, reliability matters. GCCW Limited was brought in to replace a deteriorating concrete ramp at the Ontario Mine Rescue training facility, an essential concrete work upgrade that had to be delivered with precision, speed, and zero disruption to ongoing operations.

Supporting Safe Access Without Delays

The project included demolition of the existing ramp, full site preparation, new formwork, concrete reinforcement, and finishing. Because this was a live training facility, maintaining safe access during construction was critical.

We worked closely with Ontario Mine Rescue stakeholders to sequence the project so that training schedules and safety requirements could be maintained without interruption.

Scope of the Concrete Work Included:

  • Controlled demolition and debris removal
  • Site grading and compaction
  • Custom formwork and reinforcement
  • Concrete placement and finishing
  • Seamless integration with existing infrastructure

Working Around Training Operations

Timing was everything. By conducting a detailed pre-construction review, we identified key operational windows, site access needs, and safety protocols. This allowed us to phase the work so the training facility could operate as usual, with no compromise to instructor or trainee access.

Lessons Learned: Plan Early, Communicate Often

This project emphasized the value of early stakeholder engagement. By involving all decision-makers upfront, we aligned expectations, avoided scheduling conflicts, and delivered the project on time with zero disruption. It’s a practice we apply to all active-use environments, where timing and access are as important as quality.

Built to Serve Critical Environments

Ontario Mine Rescue trains teams for some of the most hazardous conditions in the industry. Supporting their mission through durable, functional infrastructure was a responsibility we took seriously, and a reminder that even routine concrete work can have a far-reaching impact.
